IN SEPTEMBER, THE BUTTERFLIES CAME—
Thousands of them. They lighted to the trees like quiet leaves, their wings still from the necessity of rest. Impossible to imagine these delicate creatures traverse some 3,000 miles. But there they were. Motionless and undetected.
Growing up in Kansas was a wondrous thing. There, nature has her way with you whether you like it or not. She teaches early that beauty isn't always overt and admonishes often that joy is discovered in the detail. I was eight when the butterflies came. Through a child's eyes, the color and pattern hanging on each branch were leaves. Nothing more. But then the wind came and those leaves took flight. To stand amid all that color, to melt into the flurry of gold and copper fluttering in hair and on fingers embeds a sense of awe and possibility that reinvents who you are. From a very early age I learned that real beauty isn't something that can be fabricated but must be awakened within. Like those butterflies of my childhood, the inherent wonder of a person or place is hidden there. Often undetected. What is required is a little coaxing. And that is precisely what we do—Janene Kraft, Founder, Sanctuary Living
